On the Richmond High gang rape and the blame game.
Yea, that was a fun one to write.
Usual disclaimer about reading the comments on that site applies. Basically: Don’t.
Ugh. They changed my last line.
It says this:
To address that, this community — and any other in which such a culture exists — is going to have to look in the mirror. That’s where the blame lies.
And what I wrote was this:
While the crimes that took place were horrific, perhaps this can be a teaching experience for the community of Richmond, as well as for any other community where such a culture exists.
I addressed the fact in the article that the blame lies in several places. I think their edit changes everything I said previously. They put words in my mouth that are going to be thrown back at me by the readers. Not happy.
Update: I spoke to my editor about it and she changed the wording. But I’m leaving this here for anyone who read the original version because I don’t want to be made to answer to words that weren’t mine.
